OUR INTERVIEW

WHAT IS THERMO CODE SYSTEM’S CORE BUSINESS? SINCE WHEN?

THERMO CODE SYSTEM is a French manufacturer of hot stamping foil and thermal transfer ribbons intended for label printing. We have been in this industry for more than 25 years now. We started this activity—within another company—by producing hot stamping foil in the 80s. On another side, with the changes and evolution induced by technology, we adapted to the new printing process, and started the production of thermal transfer ribbon since 2001.

HOW IS THERMO CODE SYSTEM ABLE TO INNOVATE?

If we can innovate and increase our performances, it’s mainly because of the close collaboration we maintain with our clients

We always had a technology that allowed us to be different from our competitors because we can create color without any limit. If we can innovate and increase our performances, it’s mainly because of the close collaboration we maintain with our clients. Everything starts with a client. For example, we thought that our black ink wasn’t dense enough; we used research and development to find a solution, and that’s how So Black was born. Regarding So White, its creation is the outcome of our desire to bring a dense, intense and optic white onto the market, while all the white textile ink would come out grey on a black material. We not only increased the pigmentation, but also improved its resistance. And if our resistance is excellent for textiles, then a lot of areas of application could benefit from our products. If our products can handle stonewash, enzymatic washing, and industrial treatments in general, then our foil obviously can handle bad weather, UV, and many other requirements: who can do more can do less!

HOW IS DOING THE MARKET RIGHT NOW? HOW DOES THERMO CODE SYSTEM ANSWERS IT?

On this day, we are still the only manufacturer of thermal transfer ribbon certified OEKOTEX ® class I, produced in France, in the world.

The French market of textiles is decreasing within the years. It’s now been seven years in a row that the market of textiles and clothing evolves downwards, according to IFM (Institut Français de la Mode). French textile societies are facing difficulties to hold up through those evolution. A lot of companies chose to go offshore, and even if those brands kept their styling departments in France, the production has been massively exported. In the 2000, the labour force was really expensive, and some of them tried to optimize their costs. Taking their production units offshore for economic reasons, or using subcontractors was the easiest way to reduce the manufacturing costs. This profound mutation in clothing making helps to explain that usually now, when we work with a “French clothing company”, we actually collaborate with foreign subsidiaries (in China, India, Philippines, etc). We are answering the market’s demand without high-quality products that are incredibly resistant. Since 2015 we are certified OEKO-TEX® class I. To achieve this, we had to change our formulas to keep our quality, while complying to OEKO-TEX® requirements: human and environmental ecology… On this day, we are still the only manufacturer of thermal transfer ribbon certified OEKO-TEX® class I, produced in France, in the world.

WHY DID YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION UNIT IN FRANCE?

We had no interest in moving our units offshore, nor in a matter of optimizing our costs, neither for a question of loyalty.

Nothing in our fabrication goes through another entity. The fact that we produce in France allows us to control every step of production, in order to ensure a highly qualitative finally product. We doe everything we can to preserve our factory in the Rhone Alpes—Auvergne region. On another side, we’ve been working together with our team for 25 years. We had no interest in moving our units offshore, nor in a matter of optimizing our costs, neither for a question of loyalty.

WHAT DOES THERMO CODE SYSTEM’S PRODUCTS HAVE, THAT THE OTHER DOESN’T?

A unique know-how.

First of all, a choice and a unique adaptability, thanks to the widest color range of the market, an amazing resistance, and great results on any material (white, black, colored, textile, other, …) Secondly, we are a very reactive team, which makes us able to answer precise problems with a customized solution: by creating a never-seen-before color, formats or packaging upon request. We always keep an ear open for our clients, and try to integrate them into our reflexion process, to increase and/or develop products that are as effective as possible. Lastly, we are the only manufacturer of thermal transfer ribbon pure resin and hot stamping foil certified REACH and OEKO-TEX® class I, producing everything in France. Those certifications ensure our product an inoffensive aspect, respectful of the environment, but above all a unique know-how.
